Service Learning
What was the service learning about?
Greenfield's summer CLC (community-based learning) program helps students gain knowledge on common educational topics, such as English, Math, and Science. Students also gain experience in physical activities such as swimming, dancing, sports, capoeira, etc. As a volunteer, I was able to help younger students learn the given physical activities, decorate the main entrances with a given theme, and play a role as a secretary assistant.
How you felt and/or thought about the activity?
CLC is an excellent summer program for k-4 to 8th-grade students. I enjoyed interacting and working with adults, college students, and children. At first, when I started in 2013, I felt that the kids and teachers were not going to like me. However, I was wrong, because I felt belonged since I ended up building a family.

What the activity meant to you and what the value of the activity was?
I met new people and created a close relationship with them. Even though I'm still a high school student, the adults trusted me well enough, that lead them to give me the role of a "teacher" for an assigned classroom. The role given to me was a big responsibility, but I built skills to manage kids.
What did you learn from the activity and how this learning might apply beyond the activity?
I learned that in a workplace, the owners give credit and appreciate those who work and thrive their hardest. It's also possible to gain their trust, but if one follows the correct rules, such as I did. Most importantly, I learned to interact with young children by knowing how to get them involved in an activity.
